Main Employment Law Changes in 2008 The employment rights order came into force on 1st February 2008. Maximum compensation in an unfair dismissal case increased to £63,000. Maximum weekly pay to be taken into account when calculating statutory redundancy payments and the basic award in unfair dismissal claims increased to £330.
Conduct of Employment Agencies and Employment Business Came into force in April 2008. Increasing the protection for agency workers. Employers with 50 or more employees Came into force in April 2008. These companies have an additional duty to consult with their employees under the information and consultation of employees regulations 2004.
Statutory Maternity/Paternity/Adoption Pay/Sick Pay
Came into force in April 2008. Flats rates for SMP/MA/SPP/SAP increased to £117.18 per week or 90% of average weekly earnings if less.
Flat rate for SSP increased to £75.40 per week.
Annual Increase in National Minimum Wage
Came into force October 2008. Standard rate rose to £5.73, development rate rose to £4.77 and youth rate to £3.53.
